Cebu splits into two different bases. Mactan Island holds the beach resorts and the airport; Cebu City, across the channel, holds the malls and historic sites. For families the choice usually comes down to resort time versus sightseeing.
Mactan Island (Lapu-Lapu area)
Most family resorts sit along the eastern shoreline near Punta Engaño and Maribago, close to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). This suits families wanting pool and beach time without much daily transit, plus easy access to Mactan sights like the shrine and nearby marine parks. Transfer time to the airport still varies by the resort's exact stretch of coast.
Cebu City (IT Park, Uptown)
The city centre suits families mixing in heritage sites such as Fort San Pedro and Magellan's Cross, plus mall-based dining. There's no beach nearby, so day trips to Mactan or coastal towns mean crossing by taxi or arranged transfer.
Transport between the two
Cebu has no metro or rail system. Grab and metered taxis are the practical options for families with luggage; jeepneys are common but awkward with strollers. Two bridges link Mactan to Cebu City, and traffic on them can be heavy at peak hours, so plan around that.

- Whether the resort has a shallow or child-safe pool, since not all beachfront properties do
- Room configurations for families, such as connecting rooms, rather than a standard double
- How far the property sits from CEB airport, since Mactan resorts vary despite sharing the island
When to visit
The dry season, roughly December to May, is most predictable for weather, which also makes Mactan resorts fill fastest around Christmas, New Year, and the local Holy Week break. Booking early matters more for beach resorts then than for city-centre hotels, where demand stays steadier year-round.

Minor Basilica of the Holy Child
The Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebú, or simply the Santo Niño Basilica, is a Catholic minor basilica in Cebu City, Philippines. It was originally founded by Augustinian friars Andrés de Urdaneta and Diego de Herrera in 1565. It is the oldest church in the country and is purported to have been built on the site where the image of the Santo Niño de Cebú was rediscovered during the expedition of the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi.

Magellan’s Cross
Magellan's Cross Pavilion is a stone kiosk in Cebu City, Philippines. The structure is situated on Plaza Sugbo beside the Basilica del Santo Niño. It houses a Christian cross that was planted by explorers of the Spanish expedition of the first circumnavigation of the world, led by Ferdinand Magellan, upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on April 21, 1521.
