When to Visit Cebu, Philippines

Cebu has a tropical climate with a clear dry season and a wetter, typhoon-prone stretch. Mactan Island (resorts, CEB airport) and Cebu City (downtown, historic sites) sit on separate landmasses linked by bridges — weather is similar on both, but traffic between them shapes how you plan day trips.

Dry season: December to May

The most reliable stretch for Mactan beach time and day trips to Bohol or Moalboal. December to February is warm with lower humidity and calmer seas, good for diving. March to May turns hotter and drier, with April and May the most intense — strong sun, little rain, warm nights. This is also Cebu's busiest period for both foreign and domestic visitors.

Wet and typhoon season: June to November

Rain becomes frequent from June, with rising humidity and afternoon downpours. July through October carries the highest typhoon risk for central Visayas; storms can disrupt inter-island ferries and flights with little notice. Cebu City is less exposed than eastern Visayas provinces, but heavy rain still slows road traffic to Mactan. Crowds thin out, but it's a weaker window for boat-dependent plans.

Events that change prices and crowds

Sinulog Festival, the third Sunday of January, fills Cebu City with parades and street parties; rooms across the city and Mactan book out weeks ahead at higher rates. Holy Week (March or April) brings heavy domestic travel to the beach, crowding Mactan resorts and inter-island ferries. Christmas and New Year also push up demand island-wide.

What to pack

  • Breathable clothing year-round, plus a light rain jacket outside the dry months
  • Reef-safe sunscreen for the intense April-May sun
  • A dry bag for boat trips in the wet season
  • Comfortable footwear — there's no metro, so you'll rely on taxis, Grab, or buses to move between Mactan and the city

Visayas

The Visayas is one of the Philippines' three main island groups, alongside Luzon and Mindanao, comprising Cebu and numerous other islands scattered around the Visayan Sea. Along Cebu's southern coast, you can look out over the sea bordering this vast archipelago, making it a great place to feel the Philippines' geography firsthand. The draw here isn't any particular facility, but the open coastline and the view of islands stretching into the distance.

Mactan

Nature

Mactan

Mactan is an island just off the east coast of Cebu, a densely populated area divided between Lapu-Lapu City and the municipality of Cordova. As the home of Cebu's international airport, it serves as the gateway to Central Philippines travel, with resorts and diving and snorkeling spots lining its coast that draw many travelers for marine activities.
