How to Get Around Cēsis and Travel from Riga Airport

Navigating Cēsis

Cēsis is compact and best explored on foot. The medieval core, castle grounds, and parks lie within a short walk of one another.

• Walking: The primary way to get around. The integrated rail and bus terminal is under a ten-minute walk from the central square.
• Bicycle: Ideal for visiting the Gauja River valley and nearby trails. Rentals are available seasonally in town.
• Taxis: Street hailing is rare; trips must be booked by phone or mobile ride apps.

Tickets and Fares

No tourist transit passes exist or are needed within Cēsis. Regional rail and bus lines use single point-to-point tickets, purchasable at station desks, on trains via conductors, or through the national Mobilly mobile application.

From Riga Airport (RIX) to Cēsis

There is no direct public link between Riga Airport and Cēsis. Two main routes exist:

• Public transit via central Riga: Take city bus 22 from the airport to central Riga, then transfer to a regional train or bus. This is the lowest-cost option, taking around two to two and a half hours with moderate effort.
• Rental car or taxi: Driving along the A2 highway takes ninety minutes to two hours. This represents the highest cost band but eliminates transfers.

Practical Travel Notes

• Luggage: Cobbled streets and steep park staircases make wheeled luggage awkward; a backpack is easier.
• Traffic: Local congestion is negligible, though Friday afternoon departures from Riga can delay road transfers along the A2.
• Last services: Regional departures drop sharply by mid-evening. Late flight arrivals usually require staying overnight in Riga.
• Accessibility: Modern regional trains offer level boarding, but castle terrain and valley paths feature steps and unpaved ground.
