Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep is a mountain located west of Chiang Mai, reaching an elevation of 1,676 meters. It is primarily visited for the temple complex situated near its summit and the panoramic views of the city below. The site consists of two granite peaks, with the neighboring Doi Pui being slightly higher.

Getting There

To reach the summit from Chiang Mai city centre, visitors typically use a songthaew (red truck), a taxi, or a private vehicle. The journey involves a winding road ascent and takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.

Time Allocation

Allow roughly 3 to 4 hours to explore the temple grounds and the surrounding viewpoints. This provides sufficient time for the climb up the stairs and a walk around the perimeter of the site.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. The site is a popular destination and frequently becomes crowded, particularly during public holidays and the peak cool season from November to February.

Nearby Attractions

The location can be combined with other sites in the surrounding area:

  • Doi Pui (1.8km): The higher neighboring peak.
  • Doi Suthep-Pui National Park (2.5km): The protected forest area surrounding the mountain.
  • Chiang Mai Zoo (5.7km): Located on the way back toward the city.
  • Tribal Museum (8.6km): A cultural center located in the vicinity.
