Doi Suthep-Pui National Park
Overview
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is a mountainous protected area outside Chiang Mai. Travellers visit to walk nature trails and see landmarks located inside the boundary, including Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Bhubing Palace, the winter residence of the Thai royal family.
Getting There
The park lies west of the city centre. Most travellers take a shared red taxi (songthaew), private car, or motorbike. The drive up the winding mountain road takes 30 to 45 minutes from central Chiang Mai.
Time to Allow
Allow 3 to 4 hours for a single site and a viewpoint. If you intend to visit multiple landmarks or hike longer trails, allocate a full day.
When to Visit
The cool season from November to February offers comfortable temperatures. Arrive in the early morning, as major sites get crowded by midday. Between February and April, regional burning creates haze that often blocks views.
Nearby Attractions
You can combine a trip with these nearby locations:
- Doi Suthep (2.5km): The primary mountain peak and temple complex.
- Chiang Mai Zoo (3.3km): Situated at the base of the access road.
- Doi Pui (3.8km): A higher summit and village area further up the road.
- Tribal Museum (6.3km): Located northeast on the city plain.
