Chiang Mai Zoo

Chiang Mai Zoo

Overview

Opened in 1977 as northern Thailand's first zoo, this site sits west of Chiang Mai University at the foot of the mountain. It features animal enclosures and an aquarium across large, forested grounds. Travelers visit to see a variety of wildlife in an open park setting.

Getting There

Located northwest of the city centre along Huay Kaew Road, it is reachable from the Old City by red songthaew (shared taxi), taxi, or scooter. The trip takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic.

Time to Allow

Plan for 3 to 4 hours. The terrain is hilly and spread out, so seeing both the main animal areas and the aquarium can take half a day.

When to Visit

Go in the morning when the weather is cooler and animals are more active. The park gets crowded on weekends and holidays, while weekday mornings are quiet. Avoid walking during peak afternoon heat.

Nearby Attractions

You can pair a visit with these nearby destinations:

  • Doi Suthep-Pui National Park (3.3km): Located further up the same mountain road.
  • Chiang Mai National Museum (3.1km): Showcases northern Thai history.
  • Tribal Museum (3.2km): Focuses on regional hill tribe culture.
  • Wat Phra Sing (4.2km): A historic temple inside the Old City.
