Wat Chang Kham

Wat Chang Kham is a ruined temple site located within the Wiang Kum Kam archaeological area on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Visitors go here to see the remains of an ancient sanctuary, specifically the stone elephant sculptures that support the structure, which are a primary feature of the site.

Getting There

The site is located outside the main city center. Most travelers reach the area via a songthaew or ride-hailing app from the Old City. The journey typically takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Because the site consists of ruins rather than a large complex, allow approximately 30 to 45 minutes to explore the remains and observe the architectural details.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as the site is outdoors with limited shade. The dry season from November to February offers the most comfortable temperatures. The area is generally less crowded than the temples within the city walls.

Nearby Attractions

Since this site is part of a larger archaeological network, it can be combined with other nearby ruins. Within walking distance, you can visit:

  • Wat I Kang (0.3km)
  • Wat Phan Lao (0.4km)
  • Wat Pupia (0.5km)
  • Wiang Kum Kam main area (0.9km)
