Wat Pupia

Wat Pupia is a partially ruined temple located within the Wiang Kum Kam archaeological site on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Visitors go here to see the remaining stucco decorations and the original layout of the temple, which are better preserved than in some of the surrounding ruins.

Getting There

The temple is located outside the main city center of Chiang Mai. Most travelers reach the site via a short taxi or ride-share trip, or by hiring a local horse-drawn carriage from the Wiang Kum Kam entrance. The journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Visit Duration

Because the site is a ruin and relatively compact, allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to walk through the grounds and examine the architectural details.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as there is limited shade among the ruins. The cooler season from November to February is generally the most comfortable time for outdoor exploration. The site does not typically experience the same level of crowding as the temples within the Old City.

Nearby Attractions

Since this temple is part of a larger archaeological complex, it is practical to combine your visit with other nearby ruins. Within walking distance, you can find:

  • Wat I Kang (0.2km)
  • Wat Chang Kham (0.5km)
  • Wiang Kum Kam (0.5km)
  • Wat Phan Lao (0.6km)
