Moncks Cave

Located in the Redcliffs area of Christchurch, this cave is an archaeological site of archaeological significance. Discovered in 1889 during road construction, it contains evidence of early Māori settlement. Visitors go here to see the physical remains of these early inhabitants and to explore the coastal geology of the region.

Getting There

The cave is situated in the suburbs of Christchurch. From the city centre, it is most accessible by car, taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Public transport options are available, though they may require additional walking to reach the specific site.

Visit Duration

Because the site is a specific archaeological point rather than a large complex, most visitors spend between 30 and 60 minutes exploring the cave and the immediate surrounding shoreline.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements. Visiting during the spring or autumn provides moderate temperatures. It is advisable to check local tide charts before visiting, as high tides can affect access to the coastal area. The site does not typically experience the heavy crowds found at major city landmarks.
