Overview

Puka Pukara is an Inca archaeological ruin that functioned as a military fortress defending Cusco. The complex features thick limestone walls, multi-level terraces, staircases, and the foundations of defensive watchtowers. Visitors go to examine functional Inca military architecture and layout, which distinctively differs from the ceremonial stonework found closer to the city center.

Getting There

The site sits along the highway northeast of Cusco. Traveling from the historic city center by taxi or local bus takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Visit Duration

Allow 30 to 45 minutes to explore the stone pathways, terraces, and defensive levels.

When to Visit

The dry winter months from May to October offer the clearest weather. Tour group buses frequently arrive between mid-morning and early afternoon, so visit earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds.
