Saqsaywaman

Located on a hill overlooking Cusco, this Inca-era fortress is known for its massive stone masonry. Visitors go here to examine the precision of the large limestone blocks and to view the city from an elevation of over 3,700 meters above sea level.

Getting There

The site is situated just north of the Cusco city center. You can reach it via taxi or by walking uphill from the Plaza de Armas. A taxi ride typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, while walking takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on your pace and acclimatization to the altitude.

Duration of Visit

Allow between 2 and 4 hours to explore the main walls, the terraces, and the surrounding grounds.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the largest crowds and the midday sun. The dry season (May to October) offers the most stable weather, though it is also the peak tourist period. Be aware that the high altitude can cause shortness of breath during the ascent.
