Transport Modes in Cusco
Cusco's layout consists of a narrow colonial center and sprawling outskirts. The best mode of transport depends on your destination:
- Walking: The most effective way to explore the Plaza de Armas and the San Blas neighborhood. Many streets are pedestrian-only or too narrow for vehicles.
- Taxis: Ideal for reaching ruins like Sacsayhuamán or navigating the city with luggage. They are ubiquitous but lack meters; fares must be negotiated before departure.
- Collectivos: These shared vans operate on fixed routes to outlying districts and nearby towns. They are the fastest and cheapest option for those comfortable with crowded seating.
- Official Taxi: Low effort, medium cost. Available immediately upon exit. Fastest route to the center.
- App-based Ride-hailing: Low effort, medium cost. Provides a digital record of the trip, though availability can vary based on airport connectivity.
- Public Transit: High effort, low cost. Requires navigating local bus routes and walking with luggage.
- Rush Hours: Traffic peaks during morning and evening commutes, particularly around the main square and the road to the airport.
- Luggage: Taxis are the only viable option for travelers with large suitcases due to the steep, cobbled terrain.
- Accessibility: The historic center is challenging for those with limited mobility due to uneven stone paving and steep inclines.
- Altitude: Be mindful that walking at 3,000+ meters is physically demanding; taxis are recommended for the first few days of acclimatization.
Passes and Tickets
There are no unified city-wide transport passes for taxis or collectivos. For those visiting archaeological sites, the Boleto Turístico is essential. It is a bundled ticket providing entry to several ruins and museums. It does not suit travelers who only intend to visit Machu Picchu, as it covers sites within and around the city, not the sanctuary itself.
From Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport to City Center
The airport is located close to the city center, making transfers short.
