Durrës Archaeological Museum

This institution is the largest archaeological museum in Albania, housing artifacts recovered from the surrounding region. Visitors go here to view historical finds from various eras, including the city's ancient Greek and Roman periods. The museum is located near the beachfront, and the 6th-century Byzantine walls are situated immediately to the north of the site.

Getting There

The museum is located within the urban area of Durrës. From the city centre, it is accessible via a short taxi ride or a walk of approximately 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your starting point.

Visit Duration

Depending on your interest in ancient history and the pace at which you view the exhibits, allow between 1.5 to 3 hours to explore the collections and the adjacent Byzantine walls.

When to Visit

Visiting during the morning hours typically allows for a quieter experience. Like many coastal attractions, the area becomes more crowded during the summer tourist season. Visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn provides more moderate weather for the outdoor portions of the site.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the museum can be combined with several other historical sites within walking distance:

  • Roman amphitheatre of Durrës: 0.4km
  • Fatih Mosque: 0.5km
  • Great Mosque in Durrës: 0.5km
  • Venetian Tower: 0.6km
