Exploring Holyrood

Holyrood is the district located at the eastern end of Edinburgh's city centre, marking the conclusion of the Royal Mile. Travellers visit this area to walk through historic streets and experience the traditional architecture and atmosphere of the Scottish capital.

Getting There

The area is easily accessible from the city centre via a walk down the Royal Mile. Depending on your starting point in the centre, the walk typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to stroll through the streets and explore the immediate surroundings of the district.

When to Visit

The area is open to pedestrians throughout the day. Like most central locations in Edinburgh, it can become crowded during the peak summer tourist season and during the August festivals. Visiting during weekday mornings generally offers a quieter experience.

  • National Monument of Scotland: 0.4km
  • City Observatory: 0.5km
  • Calton Hill: 0.5km
  • Holyrood Palace: 0.6km
