National Monument of Scotland

Located on Calton Hill, this structure was designed as a memorial to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died during the Napoleonic Wars. It consists of a series of unfinished columns modeled after the Parthenon in Athens. Visitors go here to see the architectural ruins and to commemorate the past and inspire the courage of the future, as stated in its inscription, and to view the surrounding cityscape.

Getting There

The monument is accessible from Edinburgh city centre via a short walk or a bus ride to the base of Calton Hill. From the centre, it typically takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach the hill and ascend to the site.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to explore the monument and the immediate plateau. This provides enough time to walk around the columns and observe the surrounding views.

When to Visit

The site is open to the air, making it accessible at any time of day. It can get crowded during peak tourist seasons and at sunset when many people gather for photography. Weather conditions on the hill can be windier and colder than in the city centre, so appropriate clothing is recommended.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location, the monument is easily combined with other nearby sites:

  • Calton Hill (0.1km): The hill itself hosts several other monuments and viewpoints.
  • City Observatory (0.1km): Located a short walk away on the same hill.
  • Holyrood (0.4km): Within walking distance from the descent of the hill.
  • Holyrood Palace (0.6km): A short walk further toward the royal district.
