Holyrood Park

Holyrood Park is a large public park in Edinburgh featuring a landscape of hills, lochs, and cliffs. It was formerly used as a royal hunting ground and remains in a wild, unmanicured state. Travelers visit the park primarily for hiking and to access the higher elevations of the city for views of the urban landscape and the coast.

Getting There

The park is located at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. From the city centre, it is accessible via a walk or a short bus ride. Depending on the starting point in the centre, the journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Time Allocation

The amount of time required depends on the intended activity. A casual walk around the lower perimeter takes about one to two hours, while a full hike to the summit of Arthur's Seat generally requires three to four hours.

When to Visit

The park is open to the public year-round. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the largest crowds, which typically gather during the midday hours and on weekends. Weather in Edinburgh changes quickly, and the exposed terrain can be windy and wet, particularly in autumn and winter.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its location, the park can be combined with several nearby sites:

  • Holyrood Palace (0.3km)
  • Holyrood Abbey (0.3km)
  • Arthur's Seat (0.8km)
  • Holyrood (0.8km)
