Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque

Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, this site began as a mosque and evolved into a major center of learning that contributed to the Islamic Golden Age. Travelers visit this landmark to see its historic architecture and to understand its role as one of the oldest educational institutions in the world.

Getting There

The mosque is located within the Fes el Bali (the old medina). Because the medina consists of a dense network of narrow pedestrian alleys, it is accessible only by foot from the city center. Depending on your starting point within the medina, the walk typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to view the exterior and the surrounding courtyard. Access to the interior prayer hall is generally restricted to Muslims, so most visitors spend their time observing the architecture from the perimeter.

When to Visit

Morning visits are recommended to avoid the peak midday heat and the largest crowds. The site gets crowded during prayer times and throughout the summer season. Avoid visiting during peak prayer hours if you wish to move freely around the exterior.
