Medina of Fez

The Medina of Fez

The Medina of Fez is the old town of Fez, characterized by a dense network of narrow, maze-like alleys and traditional markets. Visitors go here to observe traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, visit leather tanneries, and browse shops selling local textiles and pottery.

Getting There

The Medina is centrally located within the city. Depending on your starting point in the city centre, it is accessible via a short taxi ride or a walk of approximately 10 to 20 minutes to reach the main gates.

Time Allocation

Due to the complexity of the layout and the number of shops and workshops, allow at least one full day to explore the area. Those wishing to navigate the deeper alleys or visit multiple craft sites may require more time.

When to Visit

The area gets crowded, particularly during midday and peak tourist seasons. Visiting in the early morning allows for a quieter experience. Be aware that the narrow streets can become congested with pedestrians and donkeys used for transport.

Nearby Attractions

The Medina is centrally positioned near several historical sites. You can combine your visit with the following locations:

  • Al Raseef Mosque (0.1km)
  • Place Seffarine (0.2km)
  • Al-Wad School Mosque (0.3km)
  • Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque (0.3km)
