piazza della Signoria
Piazza della Signoria is a W-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Central Italy. It was named after the Palazzo della Signoria, also called Palazzo Vecchio. It is the main point of the origin and history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political focus of the city. It is the meeting place of Florentines as well as the numerous tourists, located near Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza del Duomo, and gateway to the Uffizi Gallery.
Piazza della Signoria
Piazza della Signoria is the L-shaped civic square in front of Palazzo Vecchio, and it has been the political center of Florence since the days of the Florentine Republic. Rather than a garden, it functions as an open-air museum and gathering place: the Loggia dei Lanzi along one edge holds a collection of Renaissance and classical statues that can be viewed free at any time, and copies of works including Michelangelo's David stand near the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio. Most visitors pass through simply to take in the architecture and sculpture on their way between the Duomo and the Arno.
Getting there
The square sits in the historic center, within easy walking distance of most central hotels. From Piazza del Duomo it's about a 5-minute walk south. From Santa Maria Novella train station, allow roughly 15-20 minutes on foot through pedestrian streets.
How much time to allow
Walking through and viewing the outdoor statues takes 20-30 minutes. If you also step into Palazzo Vecchio or spend time at a café under the loggia, plan for an hour or more.
When to go
The piazza gets busy through the day, especially around midday and in peak summer months, with tour groups clustering near the Loggia dei Lanzi and the palazzo entrance. Early morning or evening offers a quieter look at the statues and the square's lighting after dark.
