Villa La Petraia
Villa La Petraia is one of the Medici villas scattered around Florence's Castello district, now preserved as part of a UNESCO-listed group of Medici residences. Inside, the main draw is the courtyard, which the Medici had roofed over and frescoed with scenes celebrating the family's history — it now functions as a covered hall rather than an open courtyard. The garden terraces behind the villa are laid out in the Italian style, and the upper terrace has a 19th-century belvedere aligned with a view over Florence, which is the best reason to make the climb.
Getting there
Castello lies northwest of central Florence, outside the historic centre. There's no train or tram link directly to the villa; the practical options are a taxi or rideshare (roughly 15-20 minutes from the Duomo depending on traffic), a local bus toward Castello followed by a short walk uphill, or driving, since the area has some parking near the villa. It isn't within comfortable walking distance of the centre.
Time to allow
Plan on one to two hours to see the frescoed hall and walk through the garden terraces up to the belvedere.
When to go
The gardens are outdoors and most pleasant in spring or autumn; the terraced paths involve some uphill walking, which is less appealing in the height of summer heat. It's not a heavily touristed site compared to the centre, so crowding is generally not a major concern, though this can vary with local events.
Combine it with
Villa Medici at Careggi is the closest option at about 1.7km away, making it the most natural pairing for a Medici-villas itinerary in this part of Florence. The Museum of San Marco (4.9km), Galleria dell'Accademia (5km), and the Medici Chapels (5.1km) are all back in the historic centre, roughly similar distances away, and work better as a separate stop given the trip back into town.
