Fukuoka Mosque
The Fukuoka Mosque, officially the Fukuoka Masjid Al Nour Islamic Culture Center, is a mosque located in Hakozaki, Higashi-ku, in the city of Fukuoka, in the Fukuoka Prefecture of Japan. Opened on 12 April 2009, it was the first mosque on the island of Kyūshū. Fukuoka Mosque serves the approximately 1,000 Muslims in the prefecture.
What it is
Fukuoka Mosque (Fukuoka Masjid Al Nour Islamic Culture Center) is a working mosque in the Hakozaki area of Higashi-ku, opened in 2009 as the first mosque on Kyūshū. It serves the prefecture's Muslim community, roughly 1,000 people. For most travellers it's a quick, low-key stop rather than a major sightseeing destination: a chance to see a purpose-built Islamic prayer space in a part of Japan where mosques are still rare, and to note it as a practical prayer location if you're Muslim and travelling through Fukuoka.
Getting there
From central Fukuoka (Hakata or Tenjin), the mosque is reachable by subway on the Kūkō Line to a station near Hakozaki, followed by a short walk, or by local bus. Allow around 20-30 minutes from Hakata Station including the walk.
How long to spend
As a visitor, 15-20 minutes is usually enough to see the building and grounds, unless you are attending prayers, in which case allow more time accordingly.
When to go
Visit outside of prayer times if you simply want to look around, so as not to disturb worshippers. Dress modestly, and expect the building to be quieter on weekdays than around Friday prayers.
Combine it with
- Hakozaki Shrine (0.7km) - an easy walk, and the closest attraction to pair with the mosque.
- Maidashi (1.2km) - a nearby area worth a short stroll if you're already in the neighborhood.
- Genkō Historical Museum (1.5km) - a small museum covering the Mongol invasions, within walking distance.
- Sōfuku-ji Temple (2km) - a bit farther, but manageable on foot or by a short bus ride if you want to round out a half-day covering both Shinto, Buddhist, and Islamic sites in eastern Fukuoka.
