Overview

Te Afualiku is an uninhabited islet in the Funafuti atoll and is recognized as the smallest island in Tuvalu. It is a compact landmass of sand and coral in the lagoon. Visitors travel here to see its minimal geography and observe an undisturbed coastal environment.

Getting There

The islet is accessible only by water. From the main settlement on Fongafale, near Funafuti International Airport (FUN), you can arrange a boat charter across the lagoon. The boat trip typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions.

Time to Spend

Due to its tiny footprint, 30 to 45 minutes is sufficient to walk the entire perimeter and observe the surrounding reef.

When to Visit

Plan your trip for daytime hours during calm lagoon conditions. It is important to check the tide schedule, as high tides submerge parts of the shoreline. The island is remote and never crowded, with visitors often having the entire islet to themselves.

Nearby Combinations

A boat excursion here can easily be grouped with visits to neighboring islets across the atoll:

  • Fualefeke (2.6km)
  • Tepuka (3.9km)
  • Tepuka Vili Vili (4.1km)
  • Fualopa (6.7km)
