Amatuku

Amatuku is a small island within the Funafuti atoll of Tuvalu. It is primarily known as the site of the Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute. Travelers visit the island to see the training facilities and experience the natural environment of a smaller islet away from the main population center of Fongafale.

Getting There

The island is accessible from the main center of Funafuti via the Tengako peninsula, located to the north of Fongafale Island. Access typically involves a combination of land travel to the peninsula and a short boat trip to reach the island. Travel time varies depending on boat availability and sea conditions.

Duration of Visit

A few hours are generally sufficient to explore the island and visit the maritime institute. The small size of the landmass means there is limited ground to cover.

When to Visit

Visitors should plan their trip during daylight hours. As a training institute and a small island, it does not experience typical tourist crowds, though visitors should be mindful of the institute's operational schedule.

Nearby Attractions

The island can be combined with visits to other nearby islets and areas in the atoll:

  • Mulitefala: 0.6km
  • Tengako: 3.1km
  • Fualefeke: 5.5km
  • Te Afualiku: 7.9km
