Local Transport Options
Gisenyi is a compact lakeside city where most movement happens along the main road connecting the town center to the border. The following modes are the most practical:
- Moto-Taxis: The most efficient way to navigate the city. They win for speed and the ability to reach lakeside resorts or residential areas where larger vehicles struggle.
- Taxis: Better for groups or those with luggage. They are preferred for trips to the border crossing or longer stretches along the lake shore.
- Walking: Feasible for those staying in the central business district or visiting the immediate lakeside promenade.
Passes and Tickets
There are no integrated transit passes or public transport tickets for city travel in Gisenyi. All transport is paid per trip in cash. This system suits short-term visitors but can be tedious for those making frequent small trips.
From Goma International Airport (GOM) to Gisenyi
Since Gisenyi is located across the border from Goma, travelers must cross the border between the DRC and Rwanda.
- Private Taxi: Lowest effort. Direct transport to the border, followed by a separate vehicle into Gisenyi. Moderate cost band.
- Local Transit/Moto: Higher effort due to multiple transfers and luggage handling. Lowest cost band.
Practical Notes
- Rush Hours: Traffic congestion peaks around the border crossing and the main market area during morning and evening commutes.
- Luggage: Moto-taxis are unsuitable for large suitcases; use a car taxi for airport transfers.
- Accessibility: Paved roads are limited to main arteries; side streets and lakeside paths may be uneven and difficult for those with mobility impairments.
- Last Services: While motos operate late, it is advised to arrange return transport in advance when staying in remote lakeside areas.
