Al-Hakim Mosque

Overview

Al-Hakim Mosque is a historic Islamic place of worship constructed during the Fatimid dynasty. Begun in the late 10th century and completed in the early 11th century under Caliph al-Hakim, it features early Fatimid architecture, monumental stone minarets, and an expansive open-air courtyard.

Getting There

From downtown Cairo or central transit hubs, taking a taxi or ride-hailing car takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Travelers coming from Giza should expect a 30 to 45-minute drive.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend roughly 45 to 60 minutes exploring the main prayer halls, the perimeter arcades, and the courtyard.

When to Visit

Visiting in the morning offers quieter spaces and lower temperatures. Friday midday is the weekly congregational prayer time, drawing high crowds and restricting tourism access. The cooler months from October through April provide the most comfortable weather for walking.
