Islamic Cairo

This historic district developed from the period of the Islamic conquest through the 19th century. It is a dense urban area containing a concentration of mosques, madrasas, and traditional markets. Travelers visit this area to see the architectural evolution of the city and to walk through streets where different cultural layers coexist.

Getting There

The district is located within the central part of the city. From the city center, it is accessible via taxi or ride-sharing services. Depending on the specific starting point and Cairo's traffic conditions, the journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Time Allocation

Because the area is expansive and consists of many narrow alleys and winding streets, visitors should allow at least half a day to explore the main sites. A full day is recommended for those who intend to visit multiple mosques and browse the markets.

When to Visit

Early morning is advisable to avoid the peak heat and the heaviest crowds. The district becomes very crowded in the late afternoons and evenings, particularly around the markets. During the summer months, temperatures are high, making midday exploration difficult.
