About the Site

Co Loa Citadel is an ancient fortified settlement situated roughly 20 km north of central Hanoi. Built as a capital with a spiral layout before the Common Era, the site preserves traces of Bronze Age Dong Son culture. Travellers visit to see the surviving earthwork ramparts, village temples, and shrines dedicated to King An Duong Vuong.

Getting There

The site is reachable from central Hanoi by taxi, ride-hailing service, or public bus. The trip takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic crossing the Red River.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend roughly 1.5 to 2 hours on-site. Because features are spread across an active village area, visiting involves walking between different shrines and rampart remnants.

When to Visit

Mornings or late afternoons are recommended to avoid midday heat, as the open grounds offer limited shade. The area is generally quiet and rarely crowded on regular weekdays, though attendance rises during local festival days.

Nearby Combinations

A visit can be combined with stops located along the route back to central Hanoi:

  • Nhật Tân Bridge (5.9km): Cable-stayed bridge spanning the Red River.
  • Long Bien Bridge (7.9km): Historic bridge crossing into the city.
  • Trấn Quốc Pagoda (8.2km): Ancient Buddhist pagoda on West Lake.
  • Trúc Bạch Lake (8.4km): Lake area adjacent to West Lake.
