Dong Xuan Market
Overview
Dong Xuan Market is a large indoor market located in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem district. Built in 1889 under French rule, the facility functions as a major wholesale and retail trading centre. Travellers visit to browse an extensive selection of goods spread across several floors, including everyday apparel, fabrics, souvenirs, household items, and local food products.
Getting There
The market is situated at the northern end of Hanoi's Old Quarter. From the central area around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, walking takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Taking a taxi or ride-hailing vehicle from the city centre takes around 5 to 10 minutes, depending on traffic.
Time to Allow
Plan to spend between 1 and 2 hours exploring the building. This provides sufficient time to walk through the ground-floor food sections and browse the upper retail and wholesale aisles.
When to Visit
The interior aisles are narrow and get crowded with shoppers and wholesale vendors, particularly during midday. Visiting earlier in the day allows for easier walking through the stalls. The building can become hot and humid during the warmer months, so dress comfortably.
