Located near the village of Amnisos, this cave served as a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of childbirth. It was used for worship from the Neolithic period through the Roman era, reaching its peak during the late Minoan period. Visitors go here to see the archaeological remains of this ancient cult site and the natural cave formation.

Getting There

The cave is situated west of Heraklion city centre. Access is typically via rental car or taxi, taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. The site is located near the coast of Amnisos.

Allow roughly 45 to 90 minutes to explore the cave and the immediate surrounding area.

When to Visit

The site is best visited during the spring or autumn to avoid the extreme heat of the Cretan summer. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday sun. It generally does not experience the same level of crowding as the major archaeological sites in the city.
