What It Is

Nirou Chani is an archaeological site preserving the remains of a Minoan villa from the New Palace period. Located on the northern coast of Crete in the Chersonissos area, it offers a direct look at residential and administrative Minoan architecture outside the major palace complexes.

Getting There

The site sits approximately 12 kilometers east of central Heraklion. Driving or taking a regional bus eastward takes about 15 to 20 minutes from the city center, depending on traffic along the coastal route.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 30 and 45 minutes walking through the excavated foundation walls and rooms. Because the footprint is compact, exploring the layout does not require a large time commitment.

When to Visit

Morning or late afternoon visits are best during warmer months, as the open-air ruins offer little shade. The location rarely experiences heavy crowds, allowing for a quiet walk through the grounds throughout the year.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a visit with other regional points of interest:

  • Eileithyia Cave (4.2 km)
  • Knossos and the Throne Room, Knossos (8.8 km)
  • Museum of the Battle of Crete (10.3 km)
