How to visit Higüey for the first time

City Layout and Districts
Higüey is a bustling commercial hub that functions differently from the resort towns of the coast. To navigate the city, think of it in two primary zones:
- The Urban Center: This is the dense core characterized by narrow streets, local markets, and commercial shops. It is the heart of daily life and where most dining and shopping occur.
- The Basilica District: Located slightly apart from the chaotic city center, this area is dominated by the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia and its surrounding plaza. It is a site of pilgrimage and offers a more open, quiet atmosphere compared to the downtown core.
Getting There and Around
Arrival: The primary gateway is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). From the airport, visitors typically use licensed taxis or private shuttles to reach Higüey. The drive is direct and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
Local Transport: Once inside the city, the most common way to move around is via motoconchos (motorcycle taxis). They are fast and navigate narrow streets easily. For those preferring cars, local taxis are available, though they do not always follow a fixed meter system.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Expecting a Resort Vibe: Many visitors mistake Higüey for a beach destination. It is an inland city. Do not expect beachfront hotels or resort amenities; instead, expect a raw, authentic Dominican urban experience.
- Underestimating the Heat: The city center has limited shade. Visitors often forget to carry water and sun protection while walking between the center and the Basilica.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize the following sequence:
- Primary Focus: Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia first. It is the city's most significant landmark and architectural feat.
- Secondary Focus: Explore the central market and the surrounding streets to experience the local commerce and food.
- What can wait: Extensive exploration of the outskirts or residential neighborhoods is generally unnecessary for a short first-time visit.
