Hlotse, commonly called Leribe by locals, centers on the A1 road near the Hlotse River. The town divides into three practical areas: the commercial center anchored by the market and bus rank, a quieter historic quarter dating to 1876, and surrounding residential valleys. The historic core features tree-lined avenues, Anglican mission grounds, and Major Bell's Tower, while daily commerce clusters along the main paved corridor.

Getting In and Getting Around

From Moshoeshoe I International Airport, travel north along the paved A1 highway via rental car, private transfer, or shared minibus from Maseru. In town, walking is the most efficient way to see the central sites. For trips toward the Ficksburg border or neighboring settlements, shared minibuses leave continuously from the central taxi rank. App-based ride services do not operate here.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

• Missing the local name: Minibus taxis and road signs overwhelmingly use "Leribe" instead of "Hlotse." Look for "Leribe" when boarding public transit.
• Relying on cards: Card readers are rare outside larger grocery chains. Carry cash for transit fares, craft shops, and street markets. Both Lesotho loti and South African rand circulate freely at equal value.
• Traveling after dark: Rural minibuses stop running as daylight fades. Plan all transit journeys for early morning or midday.

Dedicate your arrival morning to the colonial quarter, visiting Major Bell's Tower and local mohair weaving workshops. Midday is best spent navigating the central market stalls. Save outer sights—such as the Subeng River dinosaur footprints or day trips toward Ts'ehlanyane—for a second day once your bearings are settled.
