Understanding the Layout of Hrazdan

Hrazdan is the administrative capital of Kotayk Province. Built along the Hrazdan River and shaped by Soviet-era planning alongside incorporated villages, the city is decentralized. It is arranged into separate microdistricts rather than a single walkable center.

  • Kentron: The central administrative district with municipal offices, the main public square, and everyday commercial services.
  • Makravan: A northwestern district housing the medieval Makravank Monastery complex.
  • Vanatur and Jrarat: Residential and agricultural districts on the southern and eastern perimeter.

Arrival and Local Transportation

From Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), travel into Yerevan to reach the Northern Bus Station. From there, regional minibuses (marshrutkas) and shared taxis run along the M4 highway to Hrazdan. Ride-hailing apps also operate direct trips from Yerevan or the airport.

Distances between districts make walking impractical. Local minibuses link outer neighborhoods to Kentron, but local taxis and ride-hailing services are the most practical option for point-to-point transit.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

Travelers often assume Kecharis Monastery is inside Hrazdan proper. It is located in neighboring Tsaghkadzor, five kilometers northwest. Do not miss Hrazdan's own Makravank Monastery before continuing to the resort town. Additionally, avoid expecting fixed bus timetables; regional minibuses depart only when all seats are full.

Structuring a First Visit

Begin in Kentron to get oriented, then take a short taxi ride to Makravan to tour Makravank Monastery. Later, visit the Hrazdan reservoir, or take the short road up to Tsaghkadzor to see Kecharis Monastery and the mountain areas.
