Islamabad Zoo

The Islamabad Zoo is a wildlife facility that opened in 1978, spanning approximately 82 acres. It was designed to house a variety of animal species for public viewing. However, visitors should be aware that the zoo closed at the end of 2020 following controversies regarding animal welfare standards.

Getting There

The zoo is located within the city of Islamabad. From the city centre, it is accessible via taxi or ride-sharing services. The travel time typically ranges from 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Visit Duration

Due to the size of the grounds, visitors generally allow 2 to 3 hours to walk through the premises.

When to Visit

The best time to visit the area is during the cooler months of winter or early spring to avoid the extreme heat of the Pakistani summer. Like most public attractions in the city, it tends to get crowded during weekends and public holidays.

Nearby Attractions

The location is situated near several other points of interest, making it possible to combine visits to the following sites:

  • Daman-e-Koh (0.7km): A viewpoint overlooking the city.
  • Faisal Mosque (2.1km): One of the largest mosques in the region.
  • Margalla Hills National Park (2.3km): A protected area for hiking and nature.
  • National Art Gallery, Pakistan (3km): A venue for contemporary and traditional art.
