Margalla Hills

Overview

The Margalla Hills form the northern boundary of Islamabad as part of the Himalayan foothills. This forested range features diverse flora and wildlife, serving as a key destination for hiking, nature walks, and outdoor recreation right next to the city.

Getting There

The main trailheads and access roads are easily reached from central Islamabad by taxi or car. The drive typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on your departure point and local traffic.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend between 2 and 4 hours if you intend to hike one of the established walking trails. For a scenic drive or a shorter stop at a lookout point, 1 to 2 hours is generally sufficient.

When to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times of day to hike to avoid excessive heat. The cooler months between October and March provide the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities. The area becomes crowded with local visitors on weekends and public holidays, so choose a weekday morning for quieter trails.

Nearby Attractions

A visit here can be combined with several destinations in the immediate vicinity:

  • Margala Hills National Park (2.1km)
  • Faisal Mosque (2.1km)
  • Daman-e-Koh (3.1km)
  • Islamabad Zoo (3.6km)
