Embekka Devalaya is a 14th-century temple complex near Kandy, built during the Gampola era. It is best known for its Drummers' Hall, an open pavilion supported by carved wooden pillars. The reliefs depict traditional floral motifs, dancers, and mythical creatures, showcasing medieval woodwork craftsmanship.

The complex is located 15 kilometres southwest of Kandy city centre. Travel by car or tuk-tuk takes 45 to 60 minutes. Local buses also connect Kandy to the area via Daulagala.

When to Visit

Mornings offer cooler temperatures and clear light for examining the carvings. The site is usually quiet on weekday mornings, but crowds increase on weekends and religious holidays. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required, and footwear must be removed upon entry.
