Gadaladeniya Vihara
Overview
Gadaladeniya Vihara is an ancient Buddhist rock temple in Pilimatalawa, west of Kandy. Built on a rock outcrop, the site features South Indian architectural influences, a seated Buddha image, and historic stone carvings. Travellers visit to examine its stone construction, which differs from the wooden architecture typical of other temples in the Kandyan region.
Getting There
The temple is located west of Kandy city centre. Reaching the site by taxi, tuk-tuk, or local bus via Pilimatalawa takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
Visiting Time
Allow 45 to 60 minutes to view the main stone shrine, the secondary stupa, and the rock inscriptions.
When to Visit
Morning or late afternoon is recommended. Because shoes must be removed before entering the site, the bare rock surface heats up significantly under midday sun. Crowds are generally light on regular weekdays, though attendance rises on weekends and full moon Poya days.
