Overview

Kaunas Castle is a medieval Gothic fortification positioned where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet. Roughly one-third of the original structure stands today, featuring a round brick tower and remaining defense walls. Travellers visit to see one of Lithuania's oldest stone defensive structures and view historical exhibits inside the tower.

Getting There

The site is at the northwestern edge of the Old Town. It is a 5- to 10-minute walk from Town Hall Square. Local buses and trolleybuses also stop nearby at the Kauno pilis stop.

Recommended Time

Allow 45 to 60 minutes to tour the interior exhibits and walk around the grounds. A walk around the exterior without entering takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

When to Go

Late spring through early autumn is best for walking the outdoor grounds. The site gets busy with tour groups and local crowds on summer weekends and afternoons; weekday mornings are much quieter.
