Heritage & monuments
Ninth Fort
A 19th-century fort on the outskirts of Kaunas, used during the Soviet occupation as a transit point for prisoners bound for the camps. During the Nazi occupation it became a site of tragedy where Jews and others were killed, making it a meaningful place to reflect on history.

Kaunas Cathedral Basilica
The Roman Catholic cathedral seat of the Archdiocese of Kaunas, dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul. As the city's leading religious building, it's a peaceful place to explore.
Castles & palaces
Kaunas Castle
A medieval Gothic castle built where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet. Only about a third of its original structure remains today, bearing the marks of centuries gone by.
Nature
Neris
The Neris River rises in Belarus and flows across Lithuania before joining the Nemunas River as a tributary. In Kaunas, its banks make for a pleasant riverside stroll.

Kaunas Fortress
The Kaunas Fortress is a large-scale fortification surviving in Kaunas, Lithuania. Built by the Russian Empire in the late 19th century to defend its western border, it was the region's largest defensive complex during World War I, and its remains can still be explored today.
Zoos & aquariums
Lithuanian Zoo
Lithuania's oldest zoo, located within Ąžuolynas Park in Kaunas. Visitors can walk through lush forest paths and encounter a wide variety of animals.

Pažaislis Monastery
The largest monastery complex in Lithuania, regarded as one of the country's finest examples of Baroque architecture. The church's richly decorated marble interior is also well worth seeing.

This Roman Catholic church in Kaunas's Old Town is the city's oldest. It holds special value as the only Gothic building in Lithuania with a cross-shaped floor plan.
