Seasonal Weather and Atmosphere
Kaunas experiences a humid continental climate with distinct seasonal shifts that significantly impact daylight hours and tourist volume.
- Spring (March to May): Temperatures rise gradually. April and May offer blooming landscapes, though showers are frequent. Daylight increases rapidly, making it ideal for walking between the castle and the cathedral.
- Summer (June to August): This is the warmest period with the longest days. The city is most crowded, and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers becomes a hub for outdoor activity.
- Autumn (September to November): September remains mild, but October and November bring cooler temperatures, grey skies, and shorter days. Foliage in the city's parks is a highlight.
- Winter (December to February): Cold and often snowy. Daylight is very limited, with the sun setting in the mid-afternoon, creating a cozy, dimly lit urban atmosphere.
Choosing Your Travel Month
For Families and Sightseeing: June to August is best. The Kaunas Zoo and the outdoor fortress areas are most accessible, and the extended daylight allows for a slower pace. May and September are excellent for those seeking fewer crowds while maintaining comfortable walking weather.
When to Be Cautious: Late November and early March can be particularly bleak, characterized by slushy streets and unpredictable rain, which may hinder outdoor exploration of the Old Town.
Local Events and Availability
Accommodation availability tightens during the summer peak and around major national holidays. December sees a surge in visitors for Christmas markets, which can affect short-term booking availability in the city center.
Packing Essentials
- Summer: Light clothing, comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
- Winter: Thermal layers, a heavy insulated coat, waterproof boots, and gloves.
- Spring/Autumn: A waterproof shell or umbrella and versatile layers to adapt to fluctuating daily temperatures.
Arrival and Transport
Most international visitors arrive via Vilnius Airport (VNO). From there, regular trains and buses connect the capital to Kaunas, making the city easily accessible for a short stay or a day trip.
