Overview

The Ninth Fort is a 19th-century fortress on the outskirts of Kaunas. Used during Soviet rule as a transit prison for labor camp deportees and during Nazi occupation as a mass execution site, it serves as a site of historical reflection. Visitors come to see the preserved fortifications, underground tunnels, historical exhibits, and the large outdoor memorial monument.

Getting There

From central Kaunas, driving or taking a taxi takes about 10 to 15 minutes. City buses run from the centre to stops near the entrance, taking roughly 25 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to view the indoor exhibitions, walk through the tunnels, and explore the memorial grounds.

When to Visit

Daylight hours are best for exploring the open-air grounds. Spring through early autumn offers the most comfortable weather for walking outside. The complex rarely gets crowded, though tour groups occasionally visit around midday.

Nearby Combinations

The visit can be combined with nearby areas:

  • Sargėnai (1km): Located just northeast of the site.
  • Šilainiai (1.2km): Neighboring district with transit connections.
  • Vilijampolė (3.2km): Historic area tied to the city's wartime history.
  • Eiguliai (4.2km): District situated further east.
