Understanding the City Layout

Khorugh sits at 2,200 meters where the Gunt River joins the Panj River along the Afghan border. Framed by steep slopes, the city follows a linear ribbon along the riverbanks.

• Central Khorugh: Straddling the Gunt River, this walkable strip holds the central park, regional museum, main bazaar, and transport stops.
• Upper Slopes: Rising eastward, this residential hillside features the high-elevation Pamir Botanical Garden.
• Riverfront Border: Follows the Panj River, where the Tajik-Afghan bridge marks the border zone.

Arriving and Getting Around

Travelers arriving through Kulob Airport (TJU) must make an overland journey across mountain terrain. Shared four-wheel-drive vehicles connect Kulob to Khorugh along the Panj River gorge. The drive takes a full day, so plan transit without tight connections.

Inside the city, walking easily covers the central core. For trips up to the botanical garden or outer neighborhoods, hail an unmetered shared taxi or board a local marshrutka traveling the main avenue.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

• Missing the GBAO permit: Khorugh requires a Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region permit alongside your visa. Checkpoints enforce this strictly.
• Relying on cards: Cash is essential. Card processing is rare and local ATMs frequently run dry or lose power.
• Ignoring the altitude: The 2,200-meter elevation can cause unexpected fatigue. Acclimatize before tackling strenuous hikes.

Sensible First-Trip Flow

Dedicate day one to low-effort orientation: walk the Gunt riverfront, browse the bazaar, and rest in Central Park. On day two, head up to the botanical garden for views over the river confluence. Save longer expeditions into the Wakhan Corridor or Bartang Valley for later once transport is arranged.
