Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park

This national park consists of five islands located off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. Because the islands were separated from the mainland at the end of the last ice age, they feature a distinct landscape. Visitors go here primarily for marine activities, including snorkeling and diving, as a large portion of the park's protected area is underwater.

Getting There

The islands are accessible via boat from the city centre. Most departures occur from Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal. The boat trip typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes depending on which island is the destination.

Duration of Visit

A half-day trip is sufficient for visiting one island, while a full day is recommended for those wishing to explore multiple islands or engage in extended diving and snorkeling sessions.

Timing and Crowds

Morning visits are generally preferred to avoid the strongest midday sun. The park can get crowded, particularly on weekends and during public holidays when local tourism increases. It is advisable to arrive at the ferry terminal early to secure transportation.

Nearby Attractions

The park is composed of several islands that can be visited in a single itinerary. You can combine your visit with trips to:

  • Pulau Manukan (0km)
  • Sulug Island (1km)
  • Mamutik Island (1.5km)

For those returning to the mainland, Tanjung Aru is located 6km from the city area and is often visited after the island excursions.
