Independence Square

Overview

Independence Square (Merdeka Square) is an open grassy public square situated directly in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur. It is the historic site where Malaysia's independence was declared in 1957. Travellers visit for a reflective stroll and to view the surrounding colonial-era heritage architecture.

Getting There

The site is in central Kuala Lumpur and is accessible on foot or by public transit. Walking from nearby central areas like Chinatown or the Masjid Jamek station takes about 5 to 10 minutes. A taxi or ride-hailing trip from other parts of the city centre typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Time to Spend

Allow about 30 to 45 minutes to walk across the grounds, read the informational plaques, and photograph the surrounding buildings.

When to Visit

Because the open grounds offer very little shade, early mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times to avoid the midday heat. Evenings are also pleasant when the facade across the street is illuminated. The area can get crowded during weekends, public holidays, and national civic events.

You can easily pair a visit with several sights located within walking distance:

  • Gombak River (0.2km)
  • Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque (0.3km)
