Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque

Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad

Built in Kuala Lumpur, this is the city's oldest mosque, completed in 1909. Visitors go here to see examples of Islamic architecture, characterized by its domed decorations and curved lines. It serves as an active place of worship and a historical landmark located at the confluence of two rivers.

Getting There

The mosque is centrally located. From the city center, it is accessible via the LRT (Light Rail Transit) system, with a dedicated station serving the area. Depending on your starting point in the center, the journey typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 45 to 90 minutes to walk through the grounds and view the architecture. This provides enough time to navigate the site while respecting the prayer schedules of the local community.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The site can get crowded during Friday prayer times and on public holidays. Visitors should be aware that dress codes are enforced, and modest clothing is required for entry.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central position, the mosque can be combined with several other sites within walking distance:

  • Gombak River (0.1km): The river runs directly alongside the mosque.
  • Independence Square (0.3km): A short walk to the historic colonial plaza.
  • Central Market (0.3km): Nearby for local crafts and shopping.
  • St. John's Cathedral (0.4km): A nearby example of different religious architecture.
