Uqimerioni Fortress

Located in a gorge along the Tskhenistsqali River in western Georgia, this site consists of the ruins of an old defensive stronghold. Dating back to the 6th century, the fortress served as a strategic military point for the kingdom. Travelers visit to see the remaining stone structures and the layout of the ancient fortifications within the mountain landscape.

Getting There

The fortress is situated in the mountains outside the main urban area of Kutaisi. Access from the city centre is typically via taxi or rental car. The travel time varies depending on road conditions, but it generally takes a short drive to reach the site from the central district.

Most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours exploring the ruins and the surrounding river gorge.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements, making spring and autumn the most temperate seasons for a visit. To avoid the midday heat, morning or late afternoon visits are recommended. It does not typically experience the same level of crowding as the city's central monuments.
