How to navigate public and private transport in Kyrenia, Cyprus

Local Transport Modes
Kyrenia is a compact coastal city where the choice of transport depends on whether you are staying in the harbor area or exploring the outskirts.
- Walking: The most efficient way to navigate the Old Harbour and the historic center. Most tourist sites are clustered together.
- Taxis: The primary choice for point-to-point travel, especially for trips to Bellapais Village or Kyrenia Castle. They win on speed and convenience but cost more than buses.
- Public Buses (Dolmuş): Useful for traveling between Kyrenia and Nicosia. These are cost-effective for long-distance regional travel but operate on less frequent schedules than urban transit.
- Rental Cars: Recommended for those visiting remote beaches or the northern coast. Note that driving is on the left side of the road.
Airport to City Transfers
Kyrenia is accessed via Larnaca International Airport (LCA). Since the airport is in the south and Kyrenia is in the north, travelers must cross the border.
- Private Transfer/Taxi: Lowest effort and fastest time. These provide door-to-door service and handle the border crossing logistics. Cost band: High.
- Bus (Intercity): Requires taking a shuttle to a transit hub and switching to a north-bound bus. Highest effort and longest time. Cost band: Low.
Practical Transit Notes
- Rush Hours: Traffic congestion peaks around the city center and harbor entrance during late afternoon and early evening.
- Last Services: Public buses to Nicosia typically stop running in the early evening; verify schedules locally as they vary by season.
- Luggage: Taxis are the only reliable option for travelers with heavy luggage due to the narrow, pedestrian-heavy streets of the harbor.
- Accessibility: The historic harbor area features cobblestones, which can be challenging for wheelchairs and strollers. Main roads are generally accessible.
