Dry Season (May to October)

The Altiplano winter brings clear skies and optimal visibility across the valley. Daytime temperatures reach 12 to 15 degrees Celsius under direct sun, but nights regularly drop below freezing in June and July. This is the best window for Cordillera Real treks, Lake Titicaca day trips, and riding the Mi Teleférico network without weather delays. High visitor numbers during these months mean busier transit hubs and higher accommodation demand.

Rainy Season (November to April)

Precipitation peaks from December through February, bringing heavy afternoon downpours and low cloud cover. Overland routes toward the Yungas frequently face landslide disruptions. Although nighttime temperatures stay above freezing, damp conditions make unheated indoor spaces feel chilly. Low-season travel suits indoor sightseeing around Plaza Murillo and Sopocachi, but outdoor trekking should be avoided.

Festivals and Availability

The Fiesta del Gran Poder in late May or early June draws massive dance parades through downtown and San Pedro, closing transit arteries and driving up lodging demand. Carnival in February or March triggers multi-day business and transport shutdowns across the city.

Packing and Preparation

  • Layered clothing: Pack thermal baselayers, fleece, and a windproof jacket for sharp temperature swings between sunny days and freezing nights.
  • Sun protection: The thin atmosphere at 3,600 meters heightens UV exposure; bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat.
  • Altitude safety: Arriving at El Alto International Airport places you above 4,000 meters. Rest for 24 to 48 hours and consider lodging in lower-elevation areas like Zona Sur.
