How to Navigate Lalitpur: A First-Timer Guide to Districts, Transit, and Planning

Understanding the City Layout
Lalitpur, historically called Patan, sits directly south of Kathmandu across the Bagmati River. The city has two distinct halves: the ancient Newar core centered on Patan Durbar Square, and the western and southern districts such as Pulchowk, Kupondole, and Jhamsikhel. The historic center consists of pedestrian-scale brick alleys and hidden courtyards (bahals), while the newer districts offer broader avenues with contemporary restaurants and craft workshops.
Airport Transfers and Local Transport
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) lies northeast of the city. Official airport taxi counters or local ride-hailing apps provide the most direct transit across the river. Heavy traffic often builds near the Bagmati bridges during peak commute hours.
For inner travel, use walking as your primary mode within the old core, as cars cannot enter the narrow alleys. When travelling between the old town, Pulchowk, and Jhamsikhel, use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps along major roads.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
First-timers often treat Lalitpur as a rushed day excursion from Kathmandu and never leave the ticketed perimeter of Patan Durbar Square. Doing so misses the living city. Instead, give Lalitpur dedicated time and walk deep into the residential alleys, where metal-casting workshops and serene Buddhist courtyards like Kwa Bahal operate away from tour crowds.
Sensible First-Trip Route
- Start Here: Arrive early at Patan Durbar Square and the Patan Museum before midday heat and foot traffic build, followed by a walk through the surrounding craft quarters.
- Leave for Later: The dining streets of Jhamsikhel are best visited in the evening, while peripheral landmarks like the four outer Ashoka stupas can wait for a return trip.
