Overview

Chivateros is a prehistoric stone quarry and archaeological site near the mouth of the Chillón River, northwest of Lima. It is an open-air area where early hunter-gatherers extracted stone to produce tools. Travellers interested in archaeology visit to observe the terrain and see where some of the region's earliest human activities took place.

Getting There

From central Lima, travel north along the Panamericana Norte towards the Chillón River basin. The drive by taxi or car usually takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on city traffic.

Time to Allow

Plan for roughly 1 hour on site. The location is an open archaeological zone, which can be walked through relatively quickly.

When to Go

Go in the morning to avoid high midday temperatures and direct sun, as the desert landscape provides no shade. Clear, sunny weather is typical from December to April, while overcast skies occur from May to November. The area does not experience heavy crowds.
